Are The Tides Turning In The Culture Wars? New Polls Say So
Recent polling suggests social conservatism is entering a renaissance in the United States.
Earlier this month, new survey data from Gallup revealed a shift towards social conservatism not seen in more than a decade. According to the polling firm’s annual Values and Beliefs survey conducted May 1-24, 38 percent of respondents identified as “very conservative/conservative” on social issues compared to just 29 percent who claimed to be “very liberal/liberal.”
More data from the same survey revealed a shift away from transgenderism in particular. Just 69 percent of those surveyed said they believe athletic competition should be dictated by biological sex, up from 62 percent just two years ago. Fifty-five percent called it “morally wrong” for people to attempt a gender transition, a four-point increase from 51 percent who said the same in 2021.
The polls come on the heels of other surveys revealing similar shifts in American attitudes towards social conservatism on transgenderism and abortion. The glorification of child “sex changes” and the guarantee of abortion-on-demand have become two primary pillars of the left-wing cultural agenda, and it’s alienating Americans.
A Washington Post survey published in May forced the paper to concede "most Americans support anti-trans policies favored by GOP” in the headline.
“Most Americans don’t believe it’s even possible to be a gender that differs from that assigned at birth,” the paper reported. “A 57 percent majority of adults said a person’s gender is determined from the start, with 43 percent saying it can differ.”
More than 6 in 10 adults surveyed in the Post poll said they don’t want biological men competing in women’s leagues.
On abortion, Gallup data collected in May and published this month show only 22 percent of Americans supported abortion up until the third trimester. A majority, 55 percent, agreed abortion in the second trimester should be “generally illegal.” Considering how far liberals have moved from abortion being “safe, legal, and rare” to available on demand and taxpayer subsidized, it’s no wonder the nation is seeing its highest rate of social conservatism over 10 years.
When it comes to gender, liberal ideologues dominating state government have gone as far as declaring uncooperative parents “child abusers” for protesting their children’s premature gender decisions. And Americans are learning just how easy it’s become to get “gender-affirming treatment” with permanent consequences. One of podcaster Matt Walsh’s producers was approved for testicle removal with a 22-minute appointment, and according to Walsh, “he didn’t even attempt to pass.”
“He badly mispronounced the name of the surgery he wanted. He made it clear he didn’t know what effect the surgery would have,” Walsh said.
Beyond surveys, recent episodes illustrate a swing in the cultural pendulum to show a nation that’s far more conservative than elites in Hollywood, Wall Street, and Washington would have the world believe.
Anheuser Bush and the retail giant Target both suffered corporate stock dives after the two companies became the face of transgender activism going into “Pride Month.” The boycotts have begun to spook companies now backing away from the culture wars, according to the Wall Street Journal last week.
On Thursday, the National Hockey League decided players will no longer be compelled to wear rainbow jerseys during pregame warm-ups in June next year in what was an exercise of coercive activism.
Even the nation’s middle schoolers have begun to vocally reject the forced embrace of left-wing cultural trends in the classroom. Students at a Massachusetts school district chanted that their pronouns were “U.S.A.” when students decorated the building in rainbow posters to celebrate June as pride month. And Demi Levato, a role model to millions of impressionable adolescents, finally called it quits with “they/them” pronouns this month after finding it “exhausting.” So does the rest of the country, it seems.
